Sock It To Me!

Meet the Dizzyblonde Helen Anders.

I live in Stamford and am a full time mother to twin 18 month old girls – Amelie and Kyra. I love to create and craft -  sock dolls are my latest hobby! – I found that the girls quickly outgrew and outwore many of their clothes – especially some very funky tights and socks  so SOCK IT TO ME! was born.

By Up Cycling old socks, tights and other fabric remnants that have otherwise been discarded, neglected or are not in use I can create unique one of a kind keepsakes as oppose to toys made of new materials and mass produced. i also do custom orders for people using their own used or outgrown items to make a very personnal doll.

On the origin of sock monkeys

John Nelson, a Swedish immigrant to the United States, patented the sock-knitting machine in 1869, and began manufacturing work socks in Rockford, Illinois in 1890. The iconic sock monkeys made from red-heeled socks emerged at the earliest in 1932, the year the Nelson Knitting Company added the trademarked red heel to its product. red heel gave the monkeys their distinctive mouth. During the Great Depression, American mothers first made sock monkeys out of worn-out Rockford Red Heel Socks.

I love carrying on this thrifty tradition and some happy recipients of my dolls have already said they have become much treasured items.
